Stone Forest
"It is a waste of time without visiting the Stone Forest while staying Kunming " is a local saying to express how important this world wonder to the Kunming city.
The Stone Forest is a typical karst formation, carved in a vast stretch of limestone sediment formed on a seafloor, 270 million years ago. The limestone going out of the sea was cracked on large surfaces. About 200 million years ago, various fantastic stone forms emerged. Then, volcanic eruptions covered the calcareous formations, protecting them against the action of rains, rivers and vegetation. When erosion carved the volcanic rocks, revealing again the limestone columns, the new columns were thinner and cracked in some places. And after that, the columns were covered by the waters of a deep lake, which deposed red sediments. In Quaternary, the lake was filled by sediments and the surface waters revealed the rocks with the aspect of prismatic columns.

The Ancient Lijiang City
Since Lijiang was a port in the Southern Silk Road and tea and horse trading road, it was a market between Yunnan and Tibet. The beauty of this ancient city lies its nature and harmony with its surrounding geological environment. The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is 30km away of the ancient city. Originally a square developed on the basis of a former country market, Sifang Street is now the center for business and other activities in Lijiang.
